Obituary of Robert J. Brotherton Sr.
CARTHAGE – Robert J. Brotherton Sr., 83, of County Route 37, died on Thursday evening, April 19, 2018 surrounded by his family at the Hospice Residence of Jefferson County.
Robert was born on December 25, 1934 in Black River, New York, son of the late Arthur J. and Mildridge E. (Sheltray) Brotherton. He graduated from West Carthage High School in 1954. Upon graduation he joined the Army National Guard. On November 17, 1956 he married Elsie Hodkinson at the Woolworth Memorial Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Rev. Goddard officiating. Throughout his time in the National Guard he was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Aberdeen Pro Ground, Maryland, serving until 1958. He then went on to work at the St. Regis Paper Company, which was later renamed as the Champion Paper Company. He retired as supervisor in 1993. In 1995, he began working at Carlowden Country Club in Carthage, New York. He worked there until 2015.
He was an avid hunter. He was a life member of the Great Bend Fire Department since 1956, as well as a life member of the Elks Club for 47 years. He was also a member of the Bassett-Baxter American Legion Post #789, Carthage, and a member of the Rod & Gun St. Regis Club from 1956 until 2018.
He is survived by four children, Robert (Tammy) Brotherton Jr. of Barnes Corners, NY; Sherri (Kevin) Robinson of Blythwood, SC; Frederick (Kelly) Brotherton of Great Bend, NY; James (Randi) Brotherton of Carthage, NY; as well as several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 4-7 PM at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 11:00 AM with The Reverend Canon Samuel P. Lundy officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Great Bend.
