I met Chris many, many years ago at the Girls Friendly Society Camp which was on White Lake in Woodgate, New York. It was a girls church camp that attended for many years. She was a counselor for several years. Chris was always one of my favorite people. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I have thought of her so often in the past. The last time I saw her was when she was a physical education teacher in Old Forge. My deepest sympathy to all of you. Sheila Fovel

I had Ms.Bears for most of 7-12, before girls had teams, as l graduated in ‘69. Ah, her efforts to gather the best of us for a Play Day against another school where our red gym suites served as our uniforms! After my sophomore year of college, l was asked to sub for 3 weeks and sharing an office with someone l so respected was intimidating. But she was helpful and encouraging, it was like student teaching 2 yr early. I will miss our summer visits. RIP -no more laps to run or swim, no attendance to take.

Miss Bears most definitely made an impact on everyone she came in contact with. I had her for Gym (my least favorite class!), but later was lucky enough to get to know her as an adult with Girl Scouts. My sincere condolences.

Ms. Bears was one of my two Phys. Ed teachers at CCS in the 80's. Sometimes I would chat with them in their office, and I occasionally brought them homemade baked goods. Ms. Bears had a pleasant disposition and was kind to caring to all. Funny story though....she did get a little upset with me once when, as the new rookie scorekeeper of her girls softball team, I totally messed up her starting lineup by listing the players batting order according to their position numbers! She was not very happy with me, but they won so all was well and she didn't hold it against me. I saw her outside her home about 5 years ago so we talked for a bit. She was admired and will always be remembered.

Awe I thought about Miss Bears yesterday! I would always scuff my feet after she called me for traveling, then she would yell pick up your feet Brown.! I played by myself and practice foul shots for hours. One of the best memories was at Camp Trefoil. She was standing just past the water tanks outside of the lodge. She called us over to see what she was looking at. I started hearing moans. I was eager to see what it was. I was the only one that stepped forward to touch the cauliflower belly of the dead porcupine. I was amazed at how firm that it was. I was kneeling down and she stood about 4 feet from me and spoke to what seemed to be only me. I touched the quills and I will never forget it because I would never be able to touch the quilts of a living porcupine. She taught us to listen and to take opportunities and learn from what is in front of us at the moment. RIP Coach! Kelli Brown, CCS class of 1980.

Chris was a wonderful friend and I always enjoyed our friendship over the years. I had a boxer dog myself growing up and I always loved it when Chris and her dog were out for walks and we ran into one another. I also had the pleasure of working with her at CCS in the swimming world. I was the boy's swim coach and she the girl's at one time and she came and asked me to take over the girl's team when she ended coaching them. I started the annual CHRIS BEARS AWARD which went to the outstanding girl swimmer on the team. I was delighted that Chris came when we gave out the very first award to Jill Huckabee.. RIP Chris. You will leave many memories to those of us who knew you.

"Miss Bears" suffered through 4 years of my total incompetence involving any sport or activity ever included in a curriculum.
I saw her personal side as she and I were frequent visitors with my Aunt Ann Gates as she was dying of cancer.
The stoic, slightly intimidating teacher was replaced with an affable, compassionate, and talkative woman.
I feel blessed to have had this glimpse of the woman behind the whistle.

Miss Bears was more than my gym teacher, she was also a personal family friend. We babysat her boxer, Bobby Socks while she worked and I have so many wonderful stories about them both. I will treasure the talks we shared over the fence when I visited Carthage. Rest in peace my friend.
