Obituary of Rita M. Ashcroft

CARTHAGE – Rita M. Ashcroft, 99, longtime resident of Carthage, died early Sunday morning, October 15, 2017 at the Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre on West Street Road.

Born in Lewisburg, NY on March 27, 1918, she is the daughter of Leon & Helena Mulvaney Bodfield.  She graduated from the Carthage Augustinian Academy, and went on to marry James C. Ashcroft on September 14, 1938 in Carthage.  She was primarily a homemaker.  Mr. Ashcroft died on May 31, 1990.  She was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and a member of the Carthage TOPS for 49 years.

She is survived by her children; Kathryn A. (Joseph) West; James B. (Carol) Ashcroft; Jerold K. Ashcroft, all of Carthage; Michael T. (Margurite) Ashcroft of Trenton, Florida; along with 12 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  She is predeceased by her children; Richard and Gina Marie, as well as her sisters; Lee Smith, Catherine Cleland, Margaret Mulvaney and Frances Petrie.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, October 18th at 1:00 PM at the St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. Donald Robinson, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in New St. James Cemetery, Carthage.  Visitation will be held at the Church for one hour prior to the Mass, from 12:00 – 1:00 PM.
