Carthage – Thelma A. Burns, 96, of 507 West Street, died early Thursday morning, March 8, 2018, at Lewis County General Hospital.

Born in Montague (Rector), New York on July 23, 1921, Thelma was the daughter of William and Julia McDonald Burns. She graduated from Carthage Augustinian Academy and then from the Mercy School of Nursing. Ms. Burns enlisted in the Army in 1944. She served in the States, the Fiji Islands, Calcutta, Burma and India. She participated in the China-India-Burma Theater. During her nursing career, she was employed by both the Mercy Hospital and Samaritan Medical Center. The majority of her long nursing career was private duty. Thelma touched many lives, assisting people with their medical and spiritual needs. Thelma served on many boards over her lifetime. She was a communicant and member of St. James Catholic Church in Carthage. Thelma was devoted to her family and friends.

Thelma is survived by her cousins, Frederick and Marlene Norfolk of Adams Center with whom she resided this past year, cousins Richard and William Burke of Lowville, Kathy McIntosh of Lowville, nephew Andrew MacMillen of Oswego, a niece and several nephews. Thelma is predeceased by her five sisters, Francis, Mary, Naomi, Norma, and Wanda of Carthage. She will be remembered by her dear friends Julia Blaschke and Rebecca Knight.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 from 11 AM -1 PM at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. 500 State Street, Carthage. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 1 PM. Burial will be in the spring in Lowville Rural Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Bassett- Baxter American Legion Post #789 at 415 West Street, Carthage, NY 13619.
